ME HR & Learning received a sneak preview of Rohit Bassi’s forthcoming book, Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO. Having read it, one truth becomes apparent very quickly: this is no superficial collection of speaking tips dressed up as wisdom.
Without question, this book deserves to become a bestseller, and Rohit Bassi deserves to be recognised as a best-selling author once again. What makes it so outstanding is the way he brings together wisdom, knowledge and lived realities from different parts of the world, then connects them to neurodiversity, workplace performance, family dynamics, relationships and financial pressures. How he manages to hold such a vast range of human experiences within one coherent exploration of communication is remarkable.
This book goes to the core.
A misunderstood instruction can derail a project. A poorly handled conversation can destroy trust built over years. A moment of careless communication can damage someone’s identity, cost an organisation millions or, in healthcare, aviation, conflict and emergency situations, take lives.
Communication is never merely about speaking clearly.
It shapes relationships, reputations, cultures, commercial outcomes and human consequences.
Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO takes apart many of the simplistic beliefs surrounding communication and examines what actually happens inside us, between us and around us whenever human beings meet through words, silence, intention and energy.
It carries substance, depth and lived experience.
Fourteen Years in the Making
When we spoke with Rohit about the book, he initially described it as having taken more than thirteen years to write. As the publication date approached and the full journey was considered, the timeline had reached fourteen years.
That history can be felt on the page.
The book reads like something that has been lived, questioned, challenged, dismantled, rewritten and lived again. Its ideas have travelled through boardrooms, conference halls, training rooms, sales conversations, leadership conflicts, cultural differences and deeply personal exchanges.
These are never observations collected simply to fill pages. They have been tested through more than three decades of working with leaders, sales professionals, teams and individuals across cultures and countries.
Human communication is rarely neat. This book never pretends otherwise.
Communication Begins Before Anyone Speaks
Many communication books focus on the visible layer: the words, tone, posture, gestures and techniques.
Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO goes beneath that layer.
Before a word is spoken, each person has already brought an inner world into the conversation. They bring conditioning, identity, previous experiences, cultural influences, expectations, fears, loyalties, pressures and the realities they have learnt to defend.
The history has entered the room.
The hierarchy has entered the room.
Power has entered the room.
Fear has entered the room.
So have memory, status, intention, identity and consequence.
This is where the book begins to separate itself from conventional communication advice. It recognises that communication is never simply an exchange of information. It is an encounter between entire human systems.
That is why two people can hear exactly the same words and receive entirely different meanings.
Beyond Words
The book challenges the assumption that better communication merely requires better vocabulary.
A person can use the correct words and still damage the room. They can appear calm while silencing others. They can sound confident while speaking from fear. They can praise transparency while punishing anyone who tells them the truth. They can speak about compassion while avoiding responsibility.
Communication is shaped by far more than what is said.
It is also shaped by what remains unsaid, what the speaker intends, what the listener perceives, what the relationship carries and what each person feels is at risk.
Rohit explores these unseen currents without reducing people to labels. The reader is invited to look beyond visible behaviour and examine what may be operating beneath it.
This never excuses harmful behaviour. It deepens our capacity to recognise it, respond to it and take a wiser direction.
The W.I.S.E CEO Compass
At the centre of the book is Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO, also known as the W.I.S.E CEO Compass:
Words with Courage.
Intention with Clarity.
Silence with Conviction.
Energy with Compassion.
This is a compass, not a framework.
A framework can become something people memorise and mechanically apply. A compass helps us establish our bearings while the terrain continues to change.
Every conversation has different people, pressures, histories, cultures and consequences. A script that succeeds in one room may fail completely in another. The W.I.S.E CEO Compass provides direction without pretending that human communication can be reduced to a formula.
Words with Courage asks whether we are willing to say what needs to be said while keeping truth human.
Intention with Clarity asks whether we know what the conversation is genuinely for before entering it.
Silence with Conviction explores the power of pausing, listening, holding space and allowing meaning to settle.
Energy with Compassion examines the human presence we bring into the exchange and the effect that presence has on everyone involved.
Together, these four bearings connect with the book’s four central qualities: courage, clarity, conviction and compassion.
The compass never guarantees that every conversation will produce the outcome we desire. It is never presented as a method for controlling another person.
It asks a more demanding question:
Did we take the wisest direction available to us?
Where the Book Goes Deeper
The book moves through the visible and invisible dimensions of communication, including the inner state we carry, the way we tune ourselves before and during an exchange, and the outer expression experienced by others.
It explores the three channels through which communication travels, the patterns that quietly destroy trust, the effects of pressure and stress, and the personal realities people defend even when those realities begin to harm them.
Some passages will feel immediately familiar. Others may expose behaviours the reader has normalised for years.
The book asks us to examine how quickly we label people, how confidently we assume intention and how often we respond to our interpretation rather than what has actually occurred.
It also explores rough talks and tough talks with an important distinction.
A conversation may be tough because the truth, subject or consequence is difficult. It may become rough because of the behaviour, aggression, volatility or pressure within the exchange. Some conversations are tough without becoming rough. Others are both.
Every form requires the complete compass.
Courage without compassion may become cruelty. Compassion without courage may become avoidance. Clarity without conviction may collapse under pressure. Conviction without clarity may harden into certainty.
Every conversation requires all four.
Communication Has a Cost
One of the book’s strongest contributions is its refusal to treat communication as a soft subject.
Communication carries financial value. It affects whether deals close, customers remain, projects move and opportunities survive.
It carries time value. It determines whether people act after the first conversation or remain trapped in repeated meetings, confusion and delay.
It carries risk value. It can prevent escalation, protect trust and reduce the consequences of assumptions, ambiguity and silence.
It carries identity value. It shapes how people see themselves, how leaders are experienced and whether authority is grounded in credibility or merely performed through position.
These consequences explain why communication deserves more than another list of techniques.
The value is never found only in the conversation. It is found in what that conversation protects, creates, damages or changes.
Written for Leaders, Relevant to Every Human Being
Despite its title, Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO is never restricted to chief executives.
The CEO represents someone willing to take responsibility for the space their communication creates. That responsibility belongs to anyone whose words, silence, intention or presence affects another human being.
The book is relevant to leaders, HR professionals, learning practitioners, sales teams, educators, parents, partners, colleagues and anyone who has entered a conversation carrying something that mattered.
Its relevance to HR and Learning is particularly significant.
Organisations speak constantly about culture, engagement, trust, leadership, inclusion and accountability. Each of these becomes real, or collapses, through everyday human exchanges.
Culture travels through conversations.
Trust is shaped through moments.
Leadership becomes visible under pressure.
Our Verdict
Speak Like a W.I.S.E CEO is no comfortable collection of familiar communication advice repackaged under a new name.
It is a mirror, an examination and a compass.
It asks readers to look beyond words and recognise the unseen forces shaping every exchange. It challenges the desire for instant answers while giving people a practical direction through courage, clarity, conviction and compassion.
Fourteen years of work can be felt in its depth.
This is a book to read slowly, question honestly and return to whenever a conversation carries more weight than words alone can hold.
ME HR & Learning received an early look at the forthcoming release. Our conclusion is clear:
Rohit Bassi has written a book that takes communication apart, examines it from the inside and gives us a compass for putting it back together more wisely.
