I recently had the pleasure of meeting Navid Nazemian, the newest member of the ME HR & Learning community, and what started as a coffee and an opportunity to get to know each other quickly turned into one of those conversations that leaves you thinking long after you have said goodbye.
Navid is an executive coach, author and experienced HR leader with a particular expertise in one of the most critical — and often underestimated — moments in a senior leader's career: transitioning into a new executive role.
He is also the author of Mastering Executive Transitions: The Definitive Guide, a book that explores why even highly experienced executives can struggle when moving into a new leadership position, and what can be done to improve their chances of success.
As we talked, Navid gave me a signed copy of his book. Inside, he had written:
“Dear Paul, it was a pleasure to meet and get to know you. Here's wishing you an insightful read of the book. Warm regards, Navid.”
It was a simple gesture, but one I appreciated enormously. And it seemed particularly appropriate given what the book itself is about — people, relationships, leadership and the importance of getting transitions right.
Why executive transitions matter
We often assume that when someone is appointed to a senior leadership role, the hardest part is getting the job.
In reality, getting the job may only be the beginning.
Navid's work highlights just how challenging the transition into an executive role can be. His research and experience point to a sobering statistic: around 40% of executives fail, are pushed out or leave within their first 18 months in a new role.
That raises an important question for HR and Learning professionals:
Are organisations doing enough to support their senior leaders after the appointment has been made?
Traditional onboarding can often concentrate on systems, processes, organisational structures and introductions. But executive transitions are different.
Senior leaders need to understand the culture they are entering, build credibility and relationships, understand stakeholder expectations, identify where they can create early impact and, importantly, adapt to the organisation rather than simply attempting to replicate what made them successful somewhere else.
Navid's Double Diamond Framework© of Executive Transitions provides a structured approach to navigating this process, with a particular focus on helping executives successfully manage the complexity of their first 12–18 months.
A natural fit for the ME HR & Learning community
This is one of the reasons I am particularly pleased to welcome Navid to ME HR & Learning.
Our community brings together HR, Learning and Development professionals, coaches, consultants, advisors and business leaders who are all contributing to the changing world of work.
Executive development sits right at the heart of that conversation.
Whether you are responsible for talent, leadership development, succession planning, executive coaching or organisational development, the ability to help leaders transition successfully into new roles can have a significant impact — not just on the individual, but on the organisation around them.
A successful executive transition can accelerate performance, build confidence and create momentum.
An unsuccessful one can be expensive, disruptive and damaging to both the leader and the organisation.
And finally... the coffee
For me, one of the things I value most about ME HR & Learning is that membership is not simply about having another name on a website or another connection on LinkedIn.
It is about creating opportunities for people to meet, exchange ideas and learn from each other's experience.
Meeting Navid over coffee was exactly that.
And now I have a very interesting book to read — with a personal inscription that makes it just a little more special.
Welcome to ME HR & Learning, Navid. I look forward to continuing the conversation.
If you are an HR or Learning professional interested in executive transitions, leadership development or the future of work, I would encourage you to explore Navid's work and connect with him through the ME HR & Learning community.
