If You Had a Choice, Would You Erase Your Worst Memory Or Relive Your Best One?

A loaded question indeed!

The choices we make define us. They steer our lives and elect the path we will tread.

Even the choices one does not make, are choices made. Some choices leave indelible marks on our lives while others are simply markers along the highway. Some choices we made when we were younger are still with us and have led to where we are today. Consequences are the aftermath of our decisions. The wake behind the boat that provides insight into our thoughts and how we operate. They don’t simply disappear. If you don’t see them now, they would be waiting for you further down the line. But, consequences exist, and their impact is inevitable.

What if the bad decisions you made in life were not to blame, but, the right decisions you never put into action. Too afraid to move on them. “What If” you had made them. Look back and see the trajectory your life may have taken if you had.

The word “Someday” may jump out at you if you look back on your life. How many times have we waited for the “Right time” or said to ourselves “Someday” “Maybe tomorrow”.

Real life: Indecisions are also decisions.

Decisions not taken, are decisions taken, and, maybe opportunities lost. Every choice one makes coins a form of you that didn’t exist while purging countless other opportunities. Paths you will never experience. It’s an endless cycle of life that provides options and leaves them to you to pick. The amalgamated bag of choices is why you are where you are today.

Make choices wisely, make decisions knowing they have consequences. Far reaching ones. At the time they may not seem so. But consolidated amongst all the other choices one makes, they create the world you live in today.

Decisions are also about sacrifice. Abandoning all other choices to pick one particular one. The abandoned choices are ones you will never get to live through in your lifetime. It’s a heavy price to pay for picking one over the other.

So what goes into our decisions. Often times they may be unconsciously taken. Other times they may be impacted by the environment we were brought up in, the friends we have around us who influence our approach to life, the fears we abide by, our past experiences, the collective wisdom in general, the things we tolerate, the things we ignore, the windows we avoid and the biases we nurture, the blind spots we never truly examine, our own limiting beliefs and the assumptions we live with.

Given the above, are we prisoners of decisions we don’t even know we are being led into?

Coming back to where we started from “If you had a choice, would you erase your worst memory or relive your best one?”

A memory that broke you may have taught you life lessons that brought you to where you are today. The other memory that made you feel truly alive? It would remind you of what life is capable of giving you. But the real question is: If you did erase your worst memory, would you in turn erase the person it forced you to become? And the memory of an experience that made you feel truly alive? Did it spoil all the other smaller heartfelt moments since they never lived up to that one amazing feeling?

The answer may be simple. Are you happy with who you are today or do you yearn for better times? Therein lies your answer.
