For this edition of Coffee with ME, I had the pleasure of catching up with another ME HR & Learning Member Professor Mohamed Bamatraf at Chuno Deli, an unassuming little spot on the Dubai Knowledge Park campus.
There was something rather fitting about our choice of venue. No grand surroundings or elaborate arrangements — just good coffee, conversation and the opportunity to reconnect with someone I have known for around 15 years.
Mohamed and I go back a long way. We were strategic business partners in digital learning products, at a time when technology was creating new possibilities for how organisations could develop their people and deliver learning.
Over the years, I have come to appreciate many things about Mohamed, but one quality stands out above all others: his extraordinary ability to connect people.
A connector of people, ideas and opportunities
Mohamed has a remarkable network spanning senior government dignitaries, corporate leaders and influential people across the business community. Yet what makes him particularly special is not simply the breadth of those connections. It is the way he builds and maintains them.
Some people approach networking as a means to an end. Mohamed has always struck me as someone who sees the person first regardless of the situation
Regardless of whether he is speaking with a senior government official, a corporate leader or someone who might not have the same profile or influence, he brings the same humility and genuine interest to the conversation.
He has a gift for bringing people together, helping others and creating opportunities for connections that might otherwise never happen.
And he does it without fuss or pretension.
The value of Keeping grounded
In business, it is easy to become preoccupied with titles, status, influence and the next opportunity. We can sometimes forget that the relationships that matter most are built on trust, generosity and the way we make other people feel.
Mohamed is a reminder of that.
What I particularly admire is his willingness to assist the people he meets. His approach is grounded in service rather than status — an attitude that, in my experience, is far more powerful than any job title or business card.
Having known him for approximately 15 years, I have had the opportunity to see this quality over time. It is not about making an impression at a single meeting. It is about consistency: remaining approachable, humble and willing to help, regardless of who is sitting across the table.
That is a lesson worth remembering, whether you work in business, government, HR, Learning and Development or any other profession built on relationships.
From digital learning to lasting relationships
Our own professional relationship began through our shared work as strategic business partners in digital learning products. It was a reminder that business relationships can grow into something more enduring than a particular project or commercial opportunity.
Technology, products and markets change. What lasts is the trust established between people, the experiences they share and the respect they develop for one another.
That is one of the things I value most about the ME HR & Learning community. It creates opportunities to bring people together, exchange ideas and discover the expertise, experience and personalities behind the professional profiles.
And sometimes, the best way to do that is simply to sit down over a coffee.
A coffee worth making time for
Our conversation at Chuno Deli was another opportunity to reconnect and reflect on a relationship that has spanned many years.
It also reminded me that while we often measure professional success through achievements, positions and business results, there is another measure that deserves equal attention: how many people we have helped, connected and supported along the way.
For me, that is one of Mohamed's defining qualities.Thank you, Mohamed, for the friendship, the shared professional journey and the example you set through your humility and generosity towards others.
And if there is one thought I would leave with readers, it is this: never underestimate the power of a person who brings others together — and never underestimate the impact of someone who treats everyone with the same respect.
That is the spirit of Coffee with ME.
