Spotlight on Heinrich van der Westhuizen, Founder SpecCon Holdings
From Excel to Innovation: Heinrich shares his journey as an e-learning entrepreneur.
Heinrich van der Westhuizen's journey as an entrepreneur is a testament to the power of continuous innovation and forward-thinking. From his humble beginnings as a grass-cutting business owner in primary school to becoming the founder of SpecCon, a leading e-learning and skills development company, Heinrich's story is one of persistence, adaptability, and a keen eye for market needs.
The Genesis of SpecCon: How did you come to create Specon?
My journey with SpecCon is a powerful reminder that success in business is not just about profits, but about continuous innovation, building strong relationships, and making a positive impact on society. As SpecCon continues to grow and evolve, it stands, I believe, as an inspiring example of what can be achieved with vision, perseverance, and a commitment to making a difference.
As one of the foremost Excel users in the country, I saw an opportunity to offer Excel training and build custom modules for businesses. This niche quickly evolved as I identified new market needs and opportunities.
"I immediately thought, if something happens to me today, then all my income is gone. So firstly, I need to get out of an hourly business where I earn money through hours," Heinrich explains. This realisation led me to develop learnerships and the creation of an online learning platform.
What strategy have you developed for sustainable success?
We believe that Education is at the core of innovation. The importance of staying ahead of the market. We are always in front of the market. There's nobody that can even get close to us to what we're doing. So it's always evolving. Our forward-thinking approach has led to the development of various products and services, including:
1. TapEdge: A platform for individual learners
2. Passport to Work: A recruitment platform based on skills and qualifications
3. TapCreate: Video content creation services
4. Venue Ideas: An advanced venue search platform for events and weddings
Despite the technological focus of SpecCon, we place a strong emphasis on the human aspect of his business. He believes in creating a positive work environment where employees can balance their work and family life. "Family is important. And for me, I take it personal if I hear that somebody is working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This philosophy extends to mental health support, with the company providing a psychiatrist for employees to consult with weekly. My approach to business is not just about making money, but about making a positive impact on people's lives.
What are your challenges and where do you project growth?
Like any business, SpecCon has faced its share of challenges. Candidly we experienced a particularly difficult period when we realised our IT infrastructure needed a complete overhaul. This led to tough decisions and the rebuilding of our systems from scratch. However, these challenges have only served to make the company stronger and more innovative.
What is your vision for the future?
My vision for SpecCon goes beyond just business success. I see the potential for our products, particularly Passport to Work, to make a significant impact on unemployment in South Africa and beyond. By helping job seekers focus on the positions they're qualified for and providing clear paths for upskilling, SpecCon aims to change the narrative around job hunting and skills development.
