Spotlight on Nader Sabry, Growth Hacker Strategist, Dubai, UAE

Nader Sabry, The first Arab to be in the NASA hall of fame, reflects on the last 5 years.

1. What has happened since your Spotlight almost 5 years ago?

In the past five years, I've shifted my focus more towards client work, dedicating my expertise to actively assisting a diverse range of companies, from startups to unicorns, and even Fortune 500s. My growth strategy services have become more refined and concentrated, particularly in an advisory capacity. This has allowed me to deliver more tailored and impactful solutions, enabling me to hone in on what truly drives growth in various business contexts.

2. What were your high and low points of your time in the UAE? What reflections can you share?

My time in the UAE has been filled with high points. Living here has been an incredible experience, both personally and professionally. I’ve spent a significant part of my life in this country, with my family thriving alongside me. The safety, security, and bright future of the UAE are unmatched. One of the most remarkable aspects of this country is its unwavering focus on the future. Unlike many nations that dwell on their legacies, the UAE is constantly building new systems and breaking boundaries in innovation, always looking ahead.

3. What are the biggest changes you have faced since being in the UAE?

The biggest challenges I’ve faced weren’t specific to the UAE, but rather global in nature, particularly the impact of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns. However, the UAE has stood out as one of the best countries in the world in addressing these challenges. The nation's progressive and future-focused mindset has been evident in how it approached the pandemic—not merely avoiding or diverting from the issue but building upon it. The visionary leadership of the UAE steered everyone towards greater resilience, innovation, and creativity in problem-solving. This approach has not only strengthened the country’s resilience but has also enhanced its attractiveness for foreign direct investment and trade, leading to remarkable outcomes even four years after the lockdown.

4. If you had your time again, what might you have done differently?

I wouldn’t change a thing about what I’ve done. Every step has been a learning experience, and they all connect, contributing to the bigger picture. I have no regrets because that's how resilience is built. Even when challenges are painful and difficult to see beyond in the moment, they ultimately serve a purpose. When you take a step back, you realize that each experience, no matter how tough, plays a crucial role in shaping you in multiple ways, at various levels, all the time.

5. How do you foresee the future for yourself in the next five years?

In the next five years, I foresee a much deeper focus on bridging the gap between humans and technology. While technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, human adaptation isn't keeping up, and this disparity is likely to create significant challenges. Everything from how we connect and socialize to how we earn a living is evolving, and it's happening right before our eyes. I believe the greatest opportunity in the coming years will lie in closing this gap—ensuring that humans and technology move forward together. Though it will be incredibly challenging, it's where the most significant potential for growth and innovation exists.

6. What strategies did you find most effective in scaling your business?

In a broad sense, my expertise lies in growing organizations, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy. If I were to refine the answer, I’d emphasize the importance of focusing on a unique growth formula tailored specifically to each business. This has been my primary focus over the last five years and will continue to be so moving forward. There’s no off-the-shelf solution for growth; understanding your unique situation and where you fit within the broader landscape is crucial. Only by doing so can you discover breakthroughs that set you apart from the competition.

7. How did the challenges of the past five years shape your leadership style?

In a very simple way, the challenges of the past five years have shaped my leadership style to be rooted in empathy and compassion. I've become more understanding and creative in how I connect with people, genuinely focusing on building strong, meaningful relationships. Additionally, I've developed a razor-sharp refinement in selecting who I work with and network with. In a world filled with distortion, disruption, and anxiety, while I deeply empathize with those affected, I’ve learned to be very discerning in how I build my teams. It’s crucial to ensure that those I surround myself with are aligned and resilient, which is essential for navigating today’s complexities.

8. What guidance would you give to entrepreneurs looking to start a business in the UAE?

My advice to entrepreneurs starting a business in the UAE is to think globally from the outset. The scale you’ll need to achieve significant growth often lies beyond the UAE’s borders. One of the UAE’s greatest strengths is the extensive international networks it has developed over the decades, both in trade and investment. These networks are more accessible now than ever before, so it’s crucial to tap into them. Leverage the UAE’s global reach to scale your business beyond the local market.
